Applying Physics and Biomechanics
Oftentimes in the rehab and performance world the laws of physics and biomechanics are referred to haphazardly. Newton’s laws and different biomechanical concepts end up being loosely referred to in order to describe the purpose as to why a certain exercise or intervention was chosen. However, these types of explanations lack the depth that allow us to understand their application in a specific exercise or intervention.
Our new course Return to Sport: Acceleration and Agility is intended to give therapists and coaches a deeper understanding of the laws of physics and fundamental biomechanical principles so they can apply them in their own system.
When we have a better understanding of movement that is rooted in the laws of physics and fundamental biomechanical principles we can see why certain movement strategies emerge while having a framework from which we can make appropriate exercise selections. It also allows us to create new interventions or modify existing interventions to serve a specific purpose and not simply create novel exercises for the sake of novelty.
Discussions on laws and principles are important to develop a comprehensive understanding of what variables are important to consider when working with an athlete but if we cannot apply these laws and principles then the discussions are fruitless. In this course we provide numerous examples of how we apply them to alter an athlete’s movement strategy and how we progress different interventions based upon these laws and principles so you can apply them in your own system. Hours of practical real life application, from film analysis of actual athletes we have worked with to instructional videos for specific exercises, are included throughout the course so you can see what we actually do with the athletes we work with.
There is never only one correct way to do things. That is especially true when it comes to the rehabilitation world. Yet having laws and principles to make decisions from allows us to be confident in the decisions we make while also seeing the value in the interventions other therapists and coaches choose to implement.
